Meeting Minutes - November 15, 2004
OLD BUSINESS:
Treasurers Report:
Beginning balance: $926.73
Income: $285 (memberships and Shirts)
Expenses: $20
Ending Balance: $1191.73
Membership:
Will NESDC CLUB membership (NHMA members for a $50 club donation) be full fledged members?
No, that is a club membership, not for individuals.
59 Members for 2005
50 members from 2004 did not renew. Rhonda and Bob to follow up.
Questions have come up about family members. Rhonda proposed that we should not have family
membership because if money is a problem, only one person per family can become a member.
However for the sake of motorized training rig permission slips, each person running a motorized training rig on a trail needing
permission needs their own slip and therefore must be an individual member.
Bob seconds Rhonda's proposal
Unanimous consent
Only individual memberships will stand.
Trails and Website:
Trail info is not updateable yet.
Member area is trail conditions. Discussion ensued about whether trail conditions should be
updated by any member or just one person. Multi-member update was decided to be best.
George will see if major hazards reported can be flagged to bring attention to it. Bob H
suggested that George will need a backup person to manage it when he is unavailable.
Trail Features will be fixed and not changeable by anyone but the web master.
Membership cards have not gone out because of newsletter password miscommunication between
Rhonda and Bob H. It has been resolved. No password will be needed for submitting newsletter info.
Cards with passwords for the website along with motorized training rig permission letter for state Railbeds will
be sent out in the next week. Next year we should have people indicate whether or not they need
permission slips for motorized training rigs so we are not spending postage on someone who doesn't need one.
NOTE These permission slips are only good if dogs are attached to the motorized training rig.
Economic Impact Study
Still Waiting for responses from NHCF and NEGEF. Additional letters have been sent to to other
potential sponsors including ReflectivelyYOURS in Glenville NY, Old Mother Hubbard Company in
Lowell MA, GlowDog in Ashland MA and Auroralites in Mississauga Ontario.
NHSA Meeting
December meeting is strictly for the Groomers. Jeff Balch suggested that we go to the May Annual
meeting which is their awards banquet. We will have a 1 hour spot to make our presentations.
This means we will be giving out 2004 AND 2005 snowmobile club appreciation awards at that
meeting so we need to know during the winter if you have a club that shows exceptional.
NEW BUSINESS:
Tom suggested a sticker instead of a permission letter for next year. Bob Spoerl pointed out
that this might be a nest of confusion for who would issue the sticker and how it would be enforced.
Something to work out for next year. One sticker would be best and the use may be different
depending on the agency governing each particular trail.
The whole board is in support of Tom starting negotiations with various departments about using stickers.
Rhonda fielded a question about dogteams not being allowed on state land. It was a misunderstanding.
EVENTS on state property require special permission by fish and game or the agency controlling the
property, not private people running their dog teams. Events are qualified by having been advertised
and Sponsoring organizations must have insurance and sign a waiver.
Advertising on Website
We have been contacted by Horse Haven B&B in Salisbury, NH. They have joined our membership and want
to encourage mushers to stay at their B&B and run on their trails. There are 2 other Inns we know of
that would probably like to have some exposure also. We could provide their lodging information along
with appropriate trail information. Link from front page AD to ad on appropriate trail page. Possible
$50 fee for website/newsletter ads.
3 proprietors will be in the Newsletter before we start this program and we'll see what sort of interest
this brings us. We could really use member input as to dog (namely MUSHER) friendly B&B and Inns.
White Mountain National Forest 15 year plan
Four sections where they ask for comments are available online. Major changes will not be made at this
point but basic comments are welcome.
Trails section is the most pertinent to us. Mushers are not listed as users.... COMMENT on it.
Tom spoke with the project leader and dog teams with sleds or motorized training rigs will be allowed on trails, IN WINTER
WITH SNOW that allow snowmobiles. Dog Teams are not allowed on hiking trails. No motorized training rigs are allowed on
snowmobile trails with NO SNOW.
DRED TRAIL Issues
The Mt Washington Base road will be plowed this year so the rail corridor (snowmobile)
will be maintained down to Crawford Notch. Mt. Clinton Road to Jefferson Notch Rd will be open again.
DON’T go on a weekend!! It’s the one state snowmobile access through the Notch.
Webster lake overpass (near Franklin, West of the Dam) where the trail goes over the road is being taken
out so the trail will drop down, cross the road and then back up. Beware
Bob reviewed the Kennison accident that happened 2 years ago. A young man hit the front of a groomer
and was killed. His parents sued the groomer operator, club and landowner and the judge found for the
defendants with the statement that the club was an "occupant" of the property because they had landowner
permission to maintain the trail. This points out the importance of having landowner permission for any
outdoor activity. It protects you and the landowner.
Next Meeting:
Rhonda proposes that we continue meetings year round. Very good idea but some of the board members are
not able to commit to it. Bob H. suggests Monday nights. We will skip December and meet in January.
Monday the 24th of January will be the next meeting.
End of Business - meeting was adjourned at 9:15 pm
Respectfully submitted by Christine Richardson, secretary.
